In the three years since the federal government put the so-called Federal Office Building up for grabs in downtown Plattsburgh, vigorous debate has been conducted over whether the city should try to sell it or it should be turned over to a group to develop it as an arts venue.
Each side made compelling arguments.
Clearly, the city needs all the tax revenue it can get. There seems to be something wrong with keeping a building tax-free instead of making it a paying property, at this stage of economic strife.
On the other hand, investing in arts can be a revenue producer itself. If you exercise a little vision, you can foresee the Strand Theatre and the adjacent Federal Building combining to offer attractions that will be building community interest and tourist bustle for years to come.
